5 Beautiful Off-Shore Islands You Can Explore For The Day

Whether you live on your own, with a bunch of close friends, or as an engaged couple, moving out of your parents’ home comes with tons of benefits. One of which is the ability to do whatever you want to do without having to inform or consult your family.

With a combination of various services and benefits, such as weekly housekeeping, pool and gym access, and close proximity to public transport services, serviced apartment rental in Singapore has been gaining popularity both among young Singaporeans and foreigners.

Living in Singapore does come with its benefits, such as convenience, availability of food all around the clock, and security. However, its incredible pace of life and the overcrowding of the city are some of the things that people complain about. If you and your housemates are looking for an escape from the bustling life of downtown Singapore, you will be glad to know that there are several offshore islands that you can explore for a day getaway.

1. Sentosa Island

It is probably the most well-known and most visited off-shore island in Singapore. With beautiful beaches and fun attractions, such as Universal Studios, S.E.A Aquarium, and Siloso Beach, Sentosa has tons of things you can enjoy for the day.

If you want to avoid the crowd and are not exactly a beachgoer, Sentosa also has several nature trails, such as Historical Trail, Coastal Trail, and Mount Imbiah Nature Trail, where you can enjoy lush greeneries, quiet surroundings, and maybe some interesting wildlife.

You can get to Sentosa through several ways, such as the Sentosa Express, cars and buses, walking or the cable car.

2. St John’s Island

St John’s Island used to be a quarantine centre for diseases such as cholera, beriberi, and leprosy in the 19th century. In the mid-20th century, it was used to house a drug rehabilitation centre and a penal settlement. Today, St John’s Island is a beautiful and popular day destination for individuals, couples, and families who are looking for a rustic and original getaway. There are even several holiday bunks and bungalows that you can rent for up to 60 people for a weekend staycation.

If you are a fan of marine life, there is a marine research and conservation centre where the rich marine biodiversity of Singapore is displayed fully to visitors. St John’s Island is only accessible by ferry.

3. Coney Island

While it shares the same name as its New York counterpart, it bears no similarity. In fact, this 133-ha island, which is located a short walk off the Northeaster part of Singapore, is filled with nothing but towering Casuarina trees. The island does not have any running water or power system, which means that there is no light or fresh water on the island. Typically, visitors go to the island to cycle, bird watch, and enjoy the vast nature.

4. Pulau Ubin

Located a 15-minute ferry ride away from Singapore is Pulau Ubin, a tranquil island sanctuary that is popular among day trippers and nature lovers. Visitors are able to get a peek into Singapore’s past as the island is home to various historical sites, coconut rubber plantations, kampongs, and fish farms. There are several outdoor activities that you can enjoy on the island, from hiking to cycling and camping.

5. Lazarus island

Initially used as a prison confinement centre in the late 19th century, it was abandoned when a prisoner who was sentenced to life imprisonment made an escape from the island. Today, visitors visit Lazarus Island for its white, sandy, and clean beaches. It is also linked to St John’s Island through a short 15-minute’ walk across a causeway. Since April 2023, there have been five eco-friendly and pet-friendly cabin houses that you can book for a weekend staycation.
